The workshop will draw attention to the experiences of Africatown’s founding generation and their resilience in creating a diaspora community. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with past and current residents and descendants.

The Last Out Foundation has been working tirelessly to help children in need, families and the Africatown community. Our founder Cleon Jones is an Africatown native, New York Mets hall of Famer and World Series champion that has dedicated his life to his historic community.

Located at 2201 Papermill Road, Africatown Hall & Food Bank is the new home of the Africatown Redevelopment Corporation and a community food pantry operated by Yorktown Missionary Baptist Church and the Africatown Community Development Corporation. The building also provides office space and communal meeting/training spaces for the Africatown Heritage Preservation Foundation, Clotilda Descendants Association, and the Mobile Environmental Justice Action Coalition.
The Africatown Hall
The Plateau was a self-sustaining African American neighborhood that emerged in the 1890s–1920s, centered around the Shell Bayou area. It was home to Black-owned businesses, churches, schools, and social organizations, serving as a cultural and economic hub for the African American population of Mobile County.

The Shell Bayou Elks Lodge was a central hub of community, celebration and commerce. The was established in 1931 in Africatown-Plateau, Alabama as a place where generations have gathered. We are in the process of renewing this cornerstone of this community to be better than before. Donate

About The Cleon Jones Last Out Community Foundation
President & Founder Cleon Jones
Africatown’s own Cleon Jones has dedicated his life after retiring from major league baseball to the development of his community. He is a graduate of Mobile County Training School, a historic school that’s among the oldest schools in the state founded in 1888. His accomplishments: 1969 World Series and MLB All-State. Halls of Fame: NY Mets, State of NY & Alabama; Mobile Sports HOF, Alabama A & M among many other awards.
